About
A coffee-first cafe-restaurant rooted in volcanic landscape, quiet design, and coastal identity.
Inspired by Seixal's volcanic landscape and the quiet magnetism of Madeira's north coast, OBSIDIAN 17 was created where strong identity meets simplicity. Quality coffee, satisfying food, and a design language rooted in obsidian, stone, and sea — a destination with atmosphere, not just a stop.
The name draws from obsidian itself — dark volcanic glass, smooth, refined, and naturally striking. Something shaped by its surroundings, grounded in substance, and polished without excess.
Seixal sits on Madeira's quieter, more dramatic north coast. The black sand beach across the road is one of the island's most iconic landmarks. OBSIDIAN 17 was designed to belong to that coastline — not as a backdrop, but as part of the experience.
Coffee comes first and sets the standard for everything else. The menu extends into light meals and evening offerings — simple, consistent, and worth coming back for. The space balances dark tones, natural textures, and clean geometry. Intentional but never rigid. A morning coffee with sea air, a midday pause, a slow evening as light fades behind the cliffs. Stay a while.
What We Stand For
Every detail is held to a standard — from the coffee in the cup to the finish on the wall. Quality is not a feature here; it is the baseline. We source with care, prepare with attention, and present with intention. Nothing leaves the counter unless it reflects who we are.
We resist the urge to overcomplicate. The menu is focused. The design is restrained. The experience is clear. Simplicity is not the absence of effort — it is the result of knowing exactly what to include and what to leave out. Everything here earns its place.
A great setting changes how things taste, how time passes, and how a place stays with you. OBSIDIAN 17 is built around that idea. The volcanic palette, the coastal light, the considered materials — they work together to create a feeling that is as much a part of the offering as the food and drink.
